The anticipated return of the Zellers store at Tecumseh Mall has hit a construction snag after the City of Windsor issued an order to comply to the mall’s owner, Europro GP Inc.

According to the July 13 order, a city inspection on June 30 found renovation and construction work underway for the new Zellers without the required building permits.

The order directed the property owner to obtain permits for the tenant fit-out and any required signage before proceeding with construction. City inspectors also ordered that no work be covered up before permits are issued and inspections completed.

AM800 News made repeated attempts to reach Tecumseh Mall property management, Europro, for comment but did not receive a response.

As of Aug. 10, the city says permit applications have been submitted and are currently under review.

In a statement, Zellers said it is not responsible for obtaining the permits related to the store entrance. The company says it is working toward opening the location as soon as possible and anticipates an early fall opening date.

The Tecumseh Mall store was originally expected to open in July. It would have joined recently opened Zellers locations in Toronto and Edmonton as the retailer continues its comeback.
