Windsor city councillors may be in for a pay raise.
The last increase of just under 2% was 13 years ago and a recent change by the Canada Revenue Agency means less take home pay for councillors and the mayor.
The current base pay for a councillor is just under $29,000.
Ward 8 Councillor Bill Marra will be retiring from politics at the close of the term, but he says he supports a raise to offset increased taxation.
"I don't think the men and women that are serving politically should be consequence because of a taxation change. So at least they should stay where they're at today and then the next council should decide on how they want to address future increases," he says.
The current base pay for a councillor is just under $29,000.
Marra says there's a possibility the issue could be passed on to the new council.
"Clearly this has no direct impact on me, I'll lend my perspective and my experience to it, but if the majority of council feels that we should give the future council the opportunity to vote on it, then I'll certainly support it," Marra says. "I wouldn't be opposed to that at all."
The issue of a pay raise will be discussed during Monday night's council meeting.
Marra says there are some items he may bring forward for debate.
"The only questions I will have on Monday are around going forward. Should it be automatic increases and whether or not it should be tied to the non-union collective agreement process," he says. "I didn't see anything in the report that suggested that it's the best practice."
