Essex MPP Anthony Leardi is defending a requirement that Amherstburg consult with Diageo on how it plans to spend $500,000 from a provincial settlement tied to the closure of the local bottling plant.
As AM800 reported, a report going to the May 25 Amherstburg council meeting says once a project is chosen, the town must send it to Diageo for review and next steps, which could include agreements or meetings.
Leardi says it’s reasonable for Diageo to have input on how its $500,000 contribution is spent.
“I think it’s important for Amherstburg to work collaboratively with Diageo,” he said.
“Diageo is putting up the $500,000. I’m sure they want to know where it’s going to be spent and that is going to be actually spent for benefits for Amherstburg.”
Leardi said the funds should be viewed as a positive for the town.
“I think this should be a collaborative effort. I think people need to work together and make sure that good things happen,” he said.
Leardi said the funds will support Amherstburg’s economic and cultural future.
“We need to concentrate on what’s going to be good for Amherstburg, what’s going to develop the community culturally and economically, and that’s what this $1 million is for,” he said
“$500,000 through Invest WindsorEssex, another $500,000 directly to the Town of Amherstburg for community benefits. We have to concentrate on developing good things for the future for Amherstburg.”
Town staff suggest using the funds toward the Richmond Street sewer project or waterfront expansion, saying they align with Diageo’s criteria and does not require additional town funding.
Council will discuss the matter on May 25.
