A new public elementary school in LaSalle is a step closer to reality.
Mayor Ken Antaya says the town is finalizing the sale of some land near the Vollmer Centre to a developer, who will then sell it to Greater Essex County District School Board.
In October 2016, the Ministry of Education announced $9-million in funding to build a new Prince Andrew Public Elementary School.
Antaya says all parties are working together.
"Our staff has been coordinating the discussions between the two and looks as if they've come to an agreement on the property and the transaction should be occurring before the end of this month which is good news," says Antaya. "It's going to clear the path for them to plan and construct the public school."
The new school will be located near the Vollmer Centre and Sandwich Secondary School on Judy Recker Dr. south of Laurier Pkwy.
Antaya feels once the sale closes, the project will move along at a quick pace.
"Once the contractor has been named and they proceeded with dotting the i's and crossing the t's in relation to a contract I think it will go very quickly then," he says. "When you see construction going, you see it now even with residential and commercial construction, it happens so quickly. Institutional will probably be the same."
In October of 2017, council approved rezoning the 13 acre property for institutional use.
The new school is expected to be ready for the 2019 or 2020 school year.
The current Prince Andrew school is located on Kelly Rd. at Malden Rd.
