Amherstburg Town Council will take a look at a new housing development Monday night.
A zoning change is up for consideration to build 49 townhomes on a chunk of vacant land on Simcoe St. near Pacific Ave. The property will need to be changed from low-density residential to medium density to accommodate the semi-detached homes.
According to a report going before council, Amherstburg has an abundance detached homes, but lacks affordable housing for seniors and small families.
Deputy Mayor Leo Meloche sits on the Windsor-Essex Community Housing Corporation Board.
"It checks off a lot of boxes within our region where we lack affordable housing," says Meloche, who goes on to say the approval would be in the town's best interest with the average age on the rise in Amherstburg. "More seniors are looking to downsize their homes and townhouses will fit the bill in terms of adequate living space and low maintenance."
He tells AM800 News the project is something council will likely get behind.
"We have a waitlist of 5,000 individual requests for affordable housing, so yes, there's a big need across the county and we're trying to address that ourselves with this project," he says.
The special meeting of council starts at 5pm at Amherstburg Town Hall.
