A free interactive workshop is helping mothers and daughters navigate through social media in a positive way.
Sara Santarossa is using seven years of research to the implement the new program with the Bulimia Anorexia Nervosa Association or BANA and the University of Windsor.
The PhD. candidate says the workshop provides resources that can help strengthen the relationship between a mother and daughter through positive messaging on social media.
She's says social media can have a large influence on how we think and feel about ourselves.
"We want to be able to give those parents and positive influencers resources that they can use to make really good decisions in their parenting and help create a positive online environment for their kids," she says.
Santarossa says the project is part of her dissertation, but the end game is to create an ongoing workshop.
"Piloting in the four locations based on community organizations that want to partner with us, then we're hoping that BANA can move that forward and continue to use this in the future."
Deborah Workman attended the workshop and tells AM800 News events like Sanatarossa's are more important than ever in 2019.
"Us moms being there for our girls, social media hasn't changed, it's getting worse but just in a different way and we need to be able to step up," added Workman.
Santarossa says the workshop also challenges mothers to reflect on their own social media use.
She's held four events throughout Windsor-Essex so far.
