Residents of Tecumseh will have a new place to cool off this summer.
Work is underway on a new splash pad at St. Mary’s Park in Maidstone.
The project is the first step in a $3-million, five year plan to install water attractions at Lakewood Park, McAuliffe Park and St. Mary's Park.
Councillor Andrew Dowie says it's something residents have been asking for. "Certainly I remember from last election that was the one thing that families wanted to see. It's a great opportunity for us to, certainly in my ward, our residents to go and enjoy a beautiful part of the community that we don't get to see often enough."
"It's going to be a very valued amenity for that part of town, out in Maidstone, because really there aren't a lot of recreational opportunities," says Dowie. "It's a nice, idyllic and quiet area that we can all go and enjoy. So really looking forward to it."
The St. Mary's splash pad will cost $225,000 with the community fundraising $25,000 toward the project.
Dowie believes the splash pad will be well used. "This splash pad is for all residents. For the residents of the Maidstone hamlet, their wait is over. They have a beautiful facility that's coming on line and that they'll be able to enjoy close to home. So it's really a win-win for all of us."
The Lakewood Park splash pad carries a price tag of $2.1-million while the McAuliffe Park pad will cost $700,000.
They'll be installed at some point over the next five years.
