It was a flight a Windsor woman won't soon forget.
On board an Air Canada flight from Montego Bay, Jamaica to Toronto on Monday, May 15th, a passenger allegedly threatened to open the cabin door and take the plane down.
Gelana Khamphasath of Windsor was heading home with her one year old son and fiance when she noticed a passenger moved from first class to the back of the plane for causing a disturbance.
She says it was about an hour into the flight and he didn't appear to be of 'sound mind'. The man was placed four rows behind her.
"The flight attendants walked up and down the aisle and told us all to keep our eyes forward which is really difficult when you have a disturbance in the back," says Khamphasath. 'So I kept looking back obviously. Next thing you hear is a bunch of cupboards slamming and rattling and this is the point he grabbed the coffee pot and was swinging it around."
The flight attendants tried to calm the man down and asked for able bodied men to help.
She heard wrestling from behind which she believes was when he tried to open the cabin door threatening to take the plane down. The men were able to restrain the passenger and the flight was diverted to Orlando, Florida.
"Women were in hysterics, it was very upsetting," she recalls.
Once the plane landed in Florida, the passenger was removed from the plane and FBI agents boarded the plane to remove his belongings.
She says they were delayed for about 3.5 hours while the FBI conducted its investigation.
Overall, she applauds the flight attendants for acting professionally in a difficult situation.
