The federal NDP Industry Critic is raising concerns over one of the proponents for the Gordie Howe Bridge project.
Windsor West MP Brian Masse says there is currently a review taking place of a Chinese government owned firm, attempting to buy a major construction company.
China Communications Construction Company is attempting a $1.5-billion purchase of Aecon.
Aecon is one of the key firms in the "Bridging North America" consortium.
Masse is concerned the federal government may not be making as thorough a review as it should, before allowing the purchase.
He says this could affect a key strategic Canadian asset.
"I think the obvious connection to the Windsor project and the Gordie Howe Bridge is an additional reason why that full extensive review should take place," states Masse. "And also specific discussions government to government about how the state enterprise and its businesses are connected to the Chinese government"
He says it's a concern that a Chinese government controlled firm could have a key role in the Gordie Howe bridge project.
"The reality here is that the new border crossing is going to be done by a P-3 proponent in the private sector" says Masse "and is now opened up for other governments including the Chinese to actually have a stake in our actual physical infrastructure"
Masse points to the experience of the Windsor Detroit Tunnel, where the city had to sue to regain control of the tunnel and then discovered the maintenance of the structure had been ignored and costly repairs were needed.
