A west Windsor man is looking to help out the Downtown Windsor Community Collaborative by swimming, biking and running.
Triathlete Mike Willms is in training for an Ironman event in Florida in November.
He calls himself an ordinary man doing extraordinary things.
Willms says he was talked into going for the big race.
"Just last year I started dong some training with some local triathletes who are much better much faster and stronger than I am. And they encouraged me to go forward and put my foot forward to try and ironman Triathlon."
He says says it takes a lot of effort to train for this kind of event.
"In terms of training, I swim 10,000 to 12,000 metres a week, I bike about 250 kilometres a week and I run about 60 kilometres a week."
Willms says there's no question the swim is the hardest part, but not what he's worried about.
"Once I get out of the water I'll feel a lot better, especially if I don't get attacked by a shark. But on the bike it's six or seven hours at my pace and knowing that I'm going to be in some pain and discomfort and knowing I still have a marathon to run after that. That's probably the part I worry about the most."
An Ironman Triathlon is a 3.8-kilometre swim followed by a 180-kilometre bike ride and finally a full marathon.
He says competitors have 17 hours to complete the course, but he hopes to be finished in 14 hours.
