The City of Windsor is launching a pilot project in hopes of making the EC Row Expressway a smoother ride for drivers during construction season.
Beginning next week, signs will be posted on the expressway asking drivers to use both lanes until the actual point to merge.
It is known as the "zipper merge."
Other communities use the zipper merge but Executive Director of Operations Dwayne Dawson says the practice isn't used here.
He says drivers were calling the city encouraging the city to adopt and educate drivers.
"There will be signs in both the eastbound and westbound directions, signs well in advance indicating to ensure that you use both lanes of traffic and the next set of signs will be a prepare to merge sign," says Executive Director of Operations Dwayne Dawson.
"It is suppose to make traffic flow smoother, faster and safer for both the traffic and for the workers out there if everybody is using it correctly."
He says the zipper merge will prevent the long cues taking place right now.
"People are getting over a kilometre or more in advance at times into a single lane which leaves an empty lane all the way on the side and you are seeing motorists who are speeding up or people who are blocking that lane."
Dawson says the city did a similar project in 2009 called "Merge Now" but it didn't seem to be adopted by the drivers back then.
