Windsor Star employees have approved a three-year-deal with Postmedia.
Close to 180 employees from the papers downtown office and production facility voted 91% in favour of the contract Sunday at the Unifor Local 240 Hall on Somme Ave.
Joint Council of Unions Chair Julie Kotsis tells AM800 News workers will see a modest pay hike and avoided massive concessions.
"We got a 1% increase immediately for anyone who makes less than $20/hr, and we have a 0.5% increase for everyone else," she says. "That's not until the last year of our contract," she says. "There are a few minor things that we had to give in on but we've kept our defined benefit plan, we've kept the majority of our healthcare benefits, our dental, our short term and long term disability, our retiree benefits. Those are important things for our membership."
Kotsis says the union refused to accept the position media is on the decline — having already lobbied in Ottawa in support of reform at the top.
"When you see executives getting large pay raises it kind of says something to the membership, that it can't be all that bad," she added.
Employees had been without a contract since December of 2016
