The Windsor Star's Joint Council of Unions have come to a tentative agreement with Postmedia just hours before a possible work stoppage.
A strike deadline was set for 12am Saturday — but Chairperson Julie Kotsis tells AM800 News a deal has been reached sooner than expected.
"We reached a tentative agreement very early, six hours before our midnight deadline," she says. "I can't really tell you any details but I can tell you all three unions that represent The Windsor Star are endorsing the deal."
Kotsis says the council bridged what was seen as a major gap between both sides, but it's not up to the council to decide. Members will hold a ratification vote on Sunday.
"They're the final say, I don't think the committee would have endorsed it if we didn't, but we'll have to wait until Sunday," says Kotsis.
Employees have been without a contract since Dec. 31, 2016, but with the strike looming negotiations have been tough.
"We've been bargaining for 18-months, the employer came to us with massive concessions, the first time we've ever really faced something like that," she added. "That's why I think it was such a difficult round of bargaining."
The ratification vote is set for 12pm Sunday at the Unifor Local 240 Hall on Somme Ave.
