A final salute to one of Windsor's most treasured veterans.
Larry Costello, a veteran of the Battle of the Atlantic during World War 2, was laid to rest at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery Saturday.
Costello was a strong advocate for veterans affairs not only in Windsor, but across the country as well.
President of the Navy League of Windsor, Steve Willer, knew Costello for close to 30-years.
He says Costello was always helping others.
"He was always the go to guy if you needed something done. From taking care of the cenotaph to the flag poles on Remembrance Day and various veteran services. He was always there as a service officer if one of our veterans needed assistance with dealing with veterans affairs."
Willer says Costello was a fighter all his life.
"He was a tough, grizzly old guy and he always seemed to recover and come back and you would see him at the service dressed to the nines in his blues and greys. Even then knowing he was not well, it comes as a shock always."
He says Costello's work for veterans will not be forgotten.
"He wanted to make sure we do not forget the veterans. He was very dedicated to it and I think it will be his legacy. At least for my members and those who have memory of Larry for many years to come he will be in their minds, thoughts and prayers."
Costello was 92.
