Windsor's Sandpoint Beach will soon be more accessible.
The city is spending $40,000 on two amphibious beach wheelchairs along with beach access mats. to give those with physical disabilities a chance to get to the water's edge.
Councillor Irek Kusmierczyk says organizations like Family Respite Services and the John McGiveny Children's Centre have been asking for the upgrades. "It's critical that we improve accessibility at Sandpoint Beach, because it is the only public beach in the City of Windsor, and I think it's about time that we improve accessibility there for all residents."
"The Windsor Accessibility Advisory Committee also pushed for the changes," says Kusmierczyk. "It would have been great to have this sooner, but we're just delighted that we're moving forward with these improvements. They're much needed, especially with this being such a prominent and the only beach in the City of Windsor. It's 2017 and we've got to make sure that it's accessible for all residents of the City of Windsor to use."
The upgrades are expected to be in place in July, just in time for the Windsor-Essex Dragon Boat Festival for the Cure.
