Windsor's mayor believes the city is in a better position following the results of Monday night's federal election.
Windsor West residents re-elected the NDP's Brian Masse, while residents in Windsor-Tecumseh elected Windsor city councillor and Liberal Irek Kusmierczyk, a member of the governing party.
Over in Essex, the Conservatives' Chris Lewis beat out the NDP's Tracey Ramsey leaving this area with representation from three different parties.
"When you look at the entire landscape for Windsor-Essex, having a Liberal, having an NDP and having a Conservative going to Ottawa, I think it is brilliant for us especially in the context of having a minority government," says Mayor Drew Dilkens.
Speaking on AM800's the Morning Drive, Dilkens says he's not surprised that Masse was re-elected, but he is surprised by how close the race was in Windsor-Tecumseh.
Dilkens has high hopes for Kusmierczyk.
"Looking at the money we are looking at for flood mitigation, knowing that Irek will be there, knowing that he represents that area, he was an advocate for these types of changes on Windsor City Council, you can bet there is going to be a whole lot more going on in terms of conversation to try and get the dynamics right in Ottawa to help our city succeed."
Dilkens believes it will be easier for this area to advocate for itself in Ottawa.
"It is a lot harder for myself and members of council to try and get funding for our area when you don't have someone at the table," he says. "It requires a whole lot more effort on the part of the city and the part of the elected officials in the city to try and get that support around the table, now this is going to be a real interesting dynamic."
With a minority government, Dilkens says having a representative at the Liberal, Conservative and NDP table is very important.
