For the third year in a row Windsor Regional Hospital has been awarded a provincial citation for organ transplants.
The hospital was given the Trillium Gift of Life Provincial Conversion Rate Award showing the number of patients who have gone on to be donors.
In 2018-19 there were 13 organ donors which led to 49 transplants performed while 62 tissue donors enhanced even more lives.
Trillium Network President and CEO Ronnie Gavsie presented the award.
"These individuals would not have been able to be helped without the work of Windsor Regional's emergency critical care departments and operating room staff. In addition to celebrating these collective accomplishments, we're here today to present Windsor Regional Hospital with the provincial conversion rate award."
AM800's Will Raymond told the story of how his late mother was able to donate her eyes after passing from cancer.
"Through Trillium, we were able to find out that her eyes were able to give a middle-age man full sight, who had two kids and can now see his kids."
Dr. Nathalie Malice is in charge of the Intensive Care Unit and says it's a full team effort.
"Organ donation, organ and tissue donation saves lives and enhances lives. I have an amazing team that works around whether it's nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, physiothereapitsts, who make all of that possible."
Special recognition was given to two WRH staff members for being "hidden heroes."
Pharmacist Frank Foote and Physiotherapist Nicole MacKinnon were thanked for their unique skills in making organ transplants more effective.
