With Ontario Premier Doug Ford ordering the closure of all non-essential businesses by midnight Tuesday, the Windsor Police Service is ready to deal with those who are not following the order to close any non-essential services.
Sergeant Steve Betteridge says, up to this point, the community has been doing a great job respecting any orders that have been issued.
"For the most part, I can tell you that our community has done a tremendous job of responding to the situation, understanding and respecting the number of orders that have come out and the declarations of emergency. The goal is always community safety."
Betteridge says police to have the ability to enforce the orders.
"If somebody had a complaint where they thought someone else was being placed in danger the Windsor police would respond, 911 is always the number if there is an emergency situation. There are a number of enforcement abilities that exist."
911 should only be used in the event of an emergency situation, all other calls should be placed to the non-emergency line at 519-258-6111.
He says the majority of residents understand how important it is to follow the orders.
"Our community understands the seriousness of the situation and is doing tremendous job respecting the social distancing and the social responsibility that goes hand-in-hand to making sure we safely come through this in a very healthy and strong manner."
In his daily address to the nation Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged residents to stay home stating, "We're going to make sure this happens, whether by educating people more on the risks or by enforcing the rules if that's needed."
