A happy ending to what was a sad story.
Windsor police Constable Sean Patterson and other members of his platoon have come together to raise money to buy an Ottawa boy a new puppy.
Alex Brown and his family visited the Harrow area over the Thanksgiving weekend and his three-year-old Golden Retriever "Sasha" ran off and was eventually hit by a vehicle and killed.
The boy has autism and the dog was therapeutic and calming for him.
Patterson says he and his fellow officers followed the story in the media.
"We would sit there in the change room and on the road talking about it," says Patterson. "Everyone was hoping Sasha would be found."
When the dog was killed, Patterson reached out to a breeder he knows.
"As fate works, he has a male, yellow Lab puppy that's due to go to a home and he's been holding on to it. He says he wasn't sure why but when I called up we think that's why he was holding it," says Patterson.
The puppy costs $1,000 and Patterson says he's been collecting donations at police headquarters.
The Brown family is ecstatic, including Alex. They're coming to Windsor next Saturday to pick up "Jake."
Patterson says the family is extremely grateful for the officers' generosity.
