Windsor police are issuing a warning about a phone scam circulating in the city.
Police have received a number of complaints from people who have received a phone call from someone claiming to be working for the Canada Revenue Agency. The caller says the person owes the government money.
Other complainants say the caller poses as a member of the Windsor Police Service or an immigration officer, and the victim is pressured into making immediate payments through money grams or pre-paid cards.
The fraud is even more elaborate as the caller "spoofed" their phone number to display to the potential victim as a Windsor Police Service phone number.
Police want to remind the public that they would never contact a member of the public and threaten to arrest them for an outstanding CRA debt.
Windsor police say a fraudster is always in a hurry to get payment, so they advise slowing things down and confirming. Or, simply, hanging up.
