A non-profit Windsor organization is getting some funds to upgrade or renovate its kitchen to make it fully accessible.
The Connections Early Years Family Centre on Giles Blvd. East has received $117-thousand dollars from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to fix up its 374 sq. ft kitchen.
Executive Director Barb Brown says the kitchen needs some help.
"Currently, it is a space with an island in the middle and has very old cabinetry and not very modern appliances" says Brown.
The kitchen will get new modern cabinetry, appliances and eating area with accessible seating.
Brown says it is an important part of the centre's programs.
"We typically run about 11 to 12 programs in a week where we will provide a snack," she says. "This accessible kitchen will be able to enhance that. It is almost like it is the heart of our centre."
The centre offers programs and free services for families with children up to 6 years of age.
Brown says the money will be used for more than just the kitchen.
"We need to lower the ceiling, so it is more structural than visual, it is a realistic number because we are making it accessible, we have to open doorways and lower seating so there is a lot of requirement that is involved in that," she says.
Brown expects the work will begin this spring and should take about nine months to complete.
