Windsor-West MPP Lisa Gretzky is calling on the province to help reduce wait lists for supports for adults with developmental disabilities.
Gretzky took part in a noon hour rally on the front lawn of Queen's Park. About 100 people were joined by OPSEU President Smokey Thomas and CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn.
Under the current system, a child must re-apply for support services when they turn 18.
The wait list for residential supports is over 14,000.
Gretzky says parents are worried about their child's future.
"They are struggling to find supportive housing for their children as the children ages," says Gretzky. "One of the concerns I have heard time and time again is that they are very worried about what is going to happen to their adult children once the parents pass away."
"The Liberal government has had 14 years to address the gap in services between the age of 17 and 18 and to date nothing has been done."
Gretzky says the process itself in re-applying for funding is very intrusive and upsetting for families.
A proposed class action lawsuit underway to represent everyone who has been placed on the wait list since July 2011. The lawsuit is still awaiting certification.
