A Windsor man has been sentenced to eight years in prison in the beating death of his father.
40-year-old David Sura was sentenced Friday morning in Superior Court by Justice Bruce Thomas.
He pleaded guilty in January to manslaughter in the June 2018 death of 66-year-old Thomas Sura Sr.
Court heard the older Sura died of multiple blunt force traumatic injuries and had a blood-alcohol level in his system that was close to three times the legal limit.
The two had been drinking at the father's home on Everts Ave.
The younger Sura was represented by defence lawyer Bob DiPietro.
DiPietro was asking for eight years.
He says it was a sad case.
"He has to live with the fact that he's responsible for his father's death and he's got to live with that which is a really difficult thing for anyone to do," says DiPietro.
Assistant Crown Jayme Lesperance was asking for 10-years.
He says it was a thorough and reasoned decision.
"His honour had said it best, that it was a tragedy for everyone," says Lesperance."
Sura was seen crying and wiping tears away in the prisoner's box during sentencing.
Prior to being sentenced, he told the court, he didn't want this to happen and he misses his father.
In 2017, the younger Sura was involved in an ATV crash, was in a coma for six months and suffered a brain injury.
Sura will remain in custody for another five years, four months and 22 days with time already served.
