A Windsor man has been sentenced to ten months jail for luring a 14 year old girl on Facebook.
Danange Seneus, 24, will also be on probation for 2 years after he pleaded guilty in February to communicating with a person under the age of 16 for facilitating an offence.
In May 2016, Seneus, who was 21-years-old at the time, contacted the girl over Facebook and had a casual conversation.
Over a one month period, the conversations became more sexual in nature, text messages were exchanged and he began asking sexual questions.
The girl's mother discovered the messages and went to police.
Seneus denies there was any physical sexual contact with the victim.
In handing down the sentence, Justice Renee Pomerance said the offence was more "opportunistic than predatory."
She pointed out Seneus's age, the age gap between Seneus and the victim being only seven years and the lack of criminal record as mitigating factors.
"I am giving you the benefit of the doubt and I hope you don't betray the faith I am placing in you," said Justice Pomerance looking directly at Seneus.
Outside Superior Court, defence lawyer Tyler Jones believes the sentence sends a message.
"I hope so because this type of behaviour, this type of conduct is an issue in our society and I think it is something that needs to be dealt with in our society."
Jones called it a fair sentence.
"He is very remorseful for what happened and as he expressed in the pre-sentence report which is before the court, it is something that he is willing to accept the consequences of," says Jones.
Seneus came to Canada at the age of 16 from Haiti. He is now a Canadian citizen.
The crown had asked for a sentence of 18 to 24 months, while the defence was asking for a sentence of 8 to 12 months.
