The city has received top marks for its efforts to reduce Windsors carbon footprint
The city of Windsor has received an A- when it comes to fighting greenhouse emissions.
The grade comes from the Compact of Mayors — a global organization with the goal of fighting climate change around the world.
Windsor joined the group in 2015 but Supervisor of Environmental Sustainability and Climate Change, Karina Richters says the city was already fighting back in 2012.
"In 2012 we actually had our first Climate Change Adaptation Plan, which was approved and we're actually going through a new risk assessment. That plan is been really good at implementing it. Out of the 22 action items, 18 are actually underway or completed so we've had good success there," she says.
Richters says initiatives around ground water management, green-space, and reducing the city's carbon foot print are paying off. She says the city also continues to meet its requirements under the Carbon Disclosure Project.
"Sets ambitious targets to reduce our greenhouse-gas emotions both corporately as well as within the community," says Richters. "When we look at the whole picture of what the city of Windsor is doing, that's why we received the A-."
Officials says Windsor missed out on some marks when it came to participating in case studies on climate change.
She says the city has been involved in several studies and admits not including those items in its yearly report hurt Windsor's score.
But Richters notes Windsor is one of the communities leading the way.
"We are up there, there's a handful that got an A rating, but within the North American framework we're leading the cohort," she added.
