A Windsor immigration lawyer has been handed a 12-month jail term after being found guilty of several fraud charges.
In July of 2016, Sandra Zaher was found guilty of intent to mislead and fabricate a fraudulent claim, counsel the making of false statements and misrepresentation of facts surrounding a claim for refugee status.
In 2012, she was accused of fabricating a refugee claim while working with a client who was actually an undercover RCMP officer.
The Crown was seeking a prison term of 3 to 5 years but the the judge lessened the sentence due to her mental state. Zaher was suffering from depression at the time.
Assistant Crown Attorney Richard Pollock says "it's a sad day for the legal community but it demonstrates the administration of justice does work."
