The health unit continues to monitor the situation
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit is reporting 86 confirmed flu cases so far this season.
Manager of Infectious Disease Prevention Lora Piccinin says influenza season is at the halfway point. "Right now everything that is circulating is influenza A strain and usually influenza B starts to surface in March. So we will see, perhaps, some more outbreaks occur and a rise of influenza B. So we're not out of the woods, influenza season continues right through to pretty much the end of April."
Last year, there were 184 confirmed cases during flu season.
"The health unit is also monitoring a few outbreaks at long term care and retirement homes," says Piccinin. "We are currently only experiencing six outbreaks at this time, one influenza outbreak, one other respiratory outbreak and the rest are enteric outbreaks which means they are dealing with diarrhoea and vomiting, so very different. We're definitely on the down side of outbreaks."
