The province of Saskatchewan wants residents to automatically be an organ donor.

The Windsor-Essex Gift of Life Association is voicing concerns over a possible move by the province of Saskatchewan to increase organ donations.

Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall wants residents to automatically be a donor, unless they opt out.

It's called presumed consent but Chair of the local Gift of Life Association Niva Segatto says forcing people to donate no longer makes it a gift of life.

"Organ donation is private to a lot of people. We all have our beliefs and it is truly a gift," she says "My husband is a transplant recipient and we believe it is a gift from that family."

Segatto believes the legislation, if passed, would just encourage more people to opt out.

The donation rate in Ontario is 30% and in Windsor-Essex, it is 27%

No other province has "presumed consent" legislation.  If it becomes law, it would be the first in Canada.
