What would it take for an autonomous vehicle to cross the Windsor-Detroit tunnel?
On Friday, the City of Windsor and the City of Detroit announced a partnership to look into the issue.
Mayor Drew Dilkens says talks began more than a year ago between the two cities.
He says there are a number of challenges and issues the cities are researching.
"If an autonomous vehicle was pulling up to the toll booth, how would that vehicle know exactly where to stop," says Dilkens. "How would that vehicle know how to proceed once the gate opens. If that driver chooses to go into duty free how would you communicate that to the vehicle so the car pulls off appropriately."
Windsor is looking for $3-million per year from the province for the initiative.
The province announced it is hosting a cross-border autonomous vehicle demonstration on Monday.
The Minister of Transportation will be in attendance.
