Windsor is not renewing the contract for its sports tourism officer.
Samantha Magalas was hired on a three-year contract which runs out at the end of November.
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens says after reviewing the position, he felt it did not warrant a full-time person and instead the duties of the sports tourism officer will be the responsibility of Tourism Windsor-Essex and Pelee Island.
"The funding has run out, it was a one-time pot of money that was available," he says. "In order to fund the position in the city structure, we would have to go back and build that into the base of our budget which is not something we are prepared to do."
The three-year $300,000 contract included salary, benefits, operations and submitting bids for sporting events.
Dilkens believes the duties of the officer are still important for the city pointing out the crowds and hotel occupancy for sporting events.
"Look at the impact, the economic impact that events like FINA, that Memorial Cup, that the Police and Fire Games, that CARHA Hockey tournament, World Series of Diving, the synchro swimming, all of the OFSSA events, just look at the economic impacts."
In January 2016, the city announced Magalas had been hired for the position.
She will work for the city's parks and recreation department.
