WINDSOR — The City of Windsor is looking to give taxpayers a bit of financial relief.
Speaking on AM800's the Morning Drive, Mayor Drew Dilkens says a report to council for a special meeting on Wednesday will recommend deferring property tax payments for over three months.
"We hope to do that on Wednesday at a special council meeting that will show how we can stop payments, property tax payments, allow people to stop the payments both commercial, residential and industrial," he says.
Dilkens says council acknowledges that families need the money now for basic needs, especially if they've been laid off.
If it passes, Dilkens says it would be an unprecedented move by council.
"All taxpayers will have a 90 day reprieve to pay property taxes so, I read the report, certainly we are going back and forth a bit but we will have that to city council for a debate on Wednesday."
He notes council will make the ultimate decision tomorrow.
"In my initial conversations with council, they seem very agreeable to want to this," he says. "So basically the plan is that you wouldn't have to pay property taxes until June 30th."
Dilkens adds this isn't about waiving property taxes completely, as the city still needs to pay police and fire, but rather delaying the payment until the summer.
