Residents in west Windsor are organizing to oppose piles of petroleum coke being stored on the Detroit riverfront.
Marathon Petroleum has applied for a by-law variance from the city of Detroit to be allowed to stack the black dust next to the water.
The company claims it has developed a system of surrounding walls and sprays to contain the dust.
Sandwich BIA member Mary Ann Cuderman says there should be a clear message sent.
"Where's it going to be, it's going to be right across from us. You know what our winds are, they're predominantly from that area. Oh yes, I think the BIA should be getting involved, the city of Windsor should be getting involved, everybody should be getting involved and speaking very loud and clearly against that."
She doesn't think the plan from Marathon will control the dust.
"No, that's just big business talking. No, no it can't be done at all. They are the ones that have the problem, let's go somewhere else and find their solution. Don't dump it on us. I'm sorry, no."
Cuderman says member of congress Rashida Tlaib is expected to comment as well as other people in Detroit.
"Absolutely, both sides really, like Rashida. I think Rashida is still involved, from what I hear, she will be making a submission in that. Yes we work very closely together and I think it's time to do that again."
A 2017 Detroit ordinance on storage of products like pet coke includes a requirement it be stored and processed in enclosed structures.
The deadline to make submissions on the Marathon request is March 18, 2019.
