The future of the transportation unit at Windsor Assembly Plant is the focus of a membership meeting this weekend.
There are about 300 members of Unifor Local 444 who belong to the unit.
FCA has indicated it wants to collapse the unit and contract out the transportation work.
Local 444 President Dino Chiodo says they intend to do what it takes to maintain those jobs.
Chiodo knows the membership is on edge.
"It's in nobody's best interest for another carrier to come in and do the work we're doing today so I get the nervousness" says Chiodo. "But again we have seen this and many challenges come our way and we've been able to work with FCA to do the best thing possible and the right thing"
Chiodo doubts there's a lot of benefit for FCA to contract out the work.
He points out the new carrier would have wages about 2-thirds what FCA is paying, would need a new location and FCA would still need to have an HR and managment unit.
The 264 drivers along with some clerical and skilled trades are mainly responsible for delivering parts and other supplies to Windsor Assembly on a "just-in-time" system.
The membership meeting is this Sunday (8 AM) at the Caboto Club.
