Environment Canada has issued a weather advisory for Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent.
Severe Weather Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says the unstable airmass is tied in with a big cool airmass effecting all of southern Ontario:
"As we get rising columns of air inside this airmass they want to keep on rising as they encounter cooler air aloft," says Coulson. So they increase their intensity and that's how we result in these pop up showers and weak thunderstorms that could be happening through the afternoon hours and even into tonight as well."
He adds conditions are favourable for the development of funnel clouds.
"The concern with some of these popup showers and weak thunderstorms this afternoon is that some of them may be capable of producing funnel cloud activity and some of those funnel clouds may briefly become a tornado," says Coulson.
Scattered thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and early evening across Southern Ontario. Some of the thunderstorms will bring dime sized hail, wind gusts to 70 km/h, and frequent lightning.
