Members of Essex County Council are not keen on continuing funding for a program designed to attract retirees to the county.
Council has deferred a request for funding by the Windsor Essex Active Retirement Community Initiative to the county's budget deliberations.
The initiative was previously funded by council five years ago.
Essex Deputy Mayor Richard Meloche says he will not support funding the $60,000 asked for by the program.
He says the program had plenty of time to find alternative ways to support itself.
"I am not in favour in funding the program. This was something that was supposed to be seed money. They were given an opportunity over five years to try and create some kind of program where it would be feasible to carry on with the program without the aid of County Council or City Council and that did not happen."
Meloche says the taxpayer should not have to pay for something they will not benefit from.
"We said to them and the way it was presented to County Council was that this was seed money, something to get their program started so they would have a smooth flow in the beginning, but it was understood that eventually the community would have to pick up on these costs rather than the tax payer."
He says the County has to be selective on what it spends it's tax dollars on.
"We looked at it and really nothing had changed as far as the funding formula. It was still the county and the city that was the primary funders of the program and we know that it is businesses and retaliators that are reaping the rewards of having this program."
