Support for trans-identified people is expanding thanks to a partnership with South Essex Community Council.
Executive Director Jayce Carver tells AM800 News WE Trans Support will open a satellite office in Leamington Feb. 5.
Carver says the community council donated the office space at 215 Talbot St. E.— it will allow the support centre to provide weekly office-hours and monthly peer-support groups.
"It kind of started with a conversation around needing some sensitivity training at that organization and from there it grew into an offer of partnership because they began to see the need for their clientele," she says.
She says moving to a more conservative rural-area will be a "game changer" for the organization.
"Being able to get out to the county where people maybe don't have access changes the narrative for trans-identified people that are living in isolation that can't get to the city," she says. "We won't be able to station our foodbank out there or clothing donation program but they have similar programs so by marrying the organizations we'll offset the things we're not able to provide."
Carver hopes it's the first of several partnerships to bring services to trans-identified residents.
She'll be meeting with several municipalities that have expressed interest in a satellite-office in the coming weeks.
