An update to the trial in the murder of Windsor, Ont.'s Sara Anne Widholm that began Wednesday afternoon.
Thursday was day two of the second degree murder trial of 24-year-old Habibullah "Danny" Ahmadi. The case is being heard in Chatham, Ont. because of court availability.
Ahmadi allegedly assaulted the 76-year-old grandmother on the Ganatchio Trail in east Windsor on the morning of October 8, 2017.
CTV's Michelle Muluskie says the Crown presented evidence establishing the extent of Widholm's injuries and the timeline leading up to her death more than a year later.
The court heard she suffered life threatening head injuries caused by what doctors describe as blunt force trauma as part of an agreed statement of fact between the crown and defence.
Assistant Crown Attorney Renee Puskas read statements from multiple doctors, including Dr. Balraj Jhawar.
According to the statement, Widholm suffered scalp and facial lacerations, had an open fracture on her skull and several broken bones on her head.
Jhawar also believes Widholm's brain was injured during the attack.
The court heard Widholm underwent several surgeries in Windsor, Ont. and London, Ont. to fix the broken bones.
Dr. Jhawar says Widholm improved a little in the beginning but plateaued by May of 2018 when he determined she was in a "persistent vegetative state" which he describes as "worse ... than death."
Widholm died on December 15, 2018 — 14 months after she was attacked.
Ahmadi pleaded not guilty at the start of the trial; but the court heard he had previously admitted to inflicting the injuries.
The trial continues Friday in Chatham.
