Clevelands J.R. Smith makes a baffling play at the end Of regulation, sends game to overtime
The Warriors overcame a masterful performance from LeBron James to grab a 124-114 overtime win against the Cavaliers in Game One of the NBA Finals at ORACLE Arena.
The big story coming out of the game is a play right at the end of regulation. The Cavaliers J.R. Smith grabbed an offensive rebound after George Hill missed a free throw in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter, but dribbled the ball back toward mid-court instead of shooting, apparently thinking the Cavs had a lead.
"He thought it was over. He thought we were up one," coach Tyronn Lue said.
Yet Smith insisted he knew the score. "I just thought we were going to call a timeout. Because I got the rebound, I'm pretty sure I couldn't shoot it over KD," Smith said of Kevin Durant. "If I thought we were ahead, I would have just held on to the ball so they could foul me. Clearly that wasn't the case."
The game was tied at 107 and the decision sent the game to overtime.
James scored a Finals career-high 51 points to go with eight rebounds and eight assists in the loss.
Game Two is Sunday in Oakland.
