Charges have been laid after a Windsor woman was allegedly tortured in Winnipeg.
On August 6, 2018, the Winnipeg Police Counter Exploitation Unit began an investigation after a woman claimed she had been held captive and forced to work as an escort.
Winnipeg Constable Tammy Skrabek tells AM800 News, it came to light after she was able to escape and get to the police station for help.
"The victim had disclosed that she had been forced to travel from her home in southern Ontario, which was later identified as Windsor under threats of violence," says Constable Skrabek
The alleged assaults included electric shocks, being forcibly confined in a freezer and beaten.
Police in Winnipeg went to a home and arrested the suspect.
The victim was treated in hospital and taken to a safe place.
Skrabek says officers will likely be in contact with police in Windsor.
"I'm certain an investigation will take place in regards to her contact with this male in southern Ontario, if anything took place in that area, and it could become a long and involved investigation."
Andres Michael Pavao, 29, of Winnipeg is charged with trafficking persons, aggravated assault, forcible confinement, uttering threats to cause death of bodily harm, assault with a weapon, overcome resistance by attempting to choke or suffocate and material benefit from sexual services.
Pavao was detained in custody.
