Windsor police are getting a new tool and eyes in the sky to combat crime.
It is purchasing a drone to be used during active police investigations.
Windsor Police Sergeant Steve Betteridge says they hope to have it in operation in the fall for investigations such as accident reconstruction.
"There is tremendous technology out there that can help map and detail an entire scene that in the old days would have taken hours, if not days."
It would also help locate a missing person.
"Could be an elderly person with mental health or health issues in general, or it could be a youngster that has gone missing and using that technology and having eyes in the sky to cover a large area quickly," says Sergeant Betteridge.
Betteridge points out there are a handful, between 10 to 15, police services in Ontario that use the device in some capacity.
The drone purchase has been in the works for a while and Betteridge simply calls it a 'sign of the times', noting there wasn't a specific case that prompted the purchase.
Betteridge says officers are being trained to use the device.
