Windsor officially has its first female police chief.
At St. Gabriel's Catholic School in south Windsor on Friday, Windsor Mayor and police board chair Drew Dilkens announced that acting chief Pam Mizuno has been named the permanent chief.
Mizuno had been acting chief since Al Frederick retired at the end of June.
She is the first woman to hold the position in the city's 152-year history.
The announcement was made during an assembly at the catholic school where Mizuno's two daughters attend.
It was a surprise announcement for Mizuno, who was told she was attending the school for a child abuse prevention month assembly, but she became suspicious when she spotted the AM800 vehicle in the parking lot and then saw Mayor Dilkens in the school gymnasium.
