It was sweet revenge for the Windsor Spitfires as they blanked the London Knights 2-0 at the WFCU Centre Thursday night.
Last time the teams met Windsor put up a good fight, but the Knights blew things open in the third for a 5-2 win at Budweiser Gardens in London.
Windsor's Curtis Douglas notched the only goal Michael DiPietro would need mid-way through the first frame to put the Spitfires up 1-0. Cole Purboo would add an insurance marker in the third to make it 2-0.
DiPietro stopped all 32-shots he faced to improve to 1-1 on the year and grab top star of the game honours. DiPietro also tied an OHL record for his 16th career shutout.
"To do it in front of the home-town crowd and in front of mom and dad, that was really important for me," he says. "Obviously I'm super excited to have that but I'm really looking forward to not only surpassing it, but building on it to keep getting the wins and moving this team in the right direction."
DiPietro tells AM800 News he hopes his first career shutout over any London team create a spark after a slow start to the season.
Douglas says getting his first goal of the season out of the way was a relief.
"I needed to be a lot better and start to play my brand of hockey, which I think I did tonight and I really used that motivation to propel myself forward and I thought I played a ton better tonight when I finally got that first goal," says Douglas.
Head Coach Trevor Letowski tells AM800 News watching his players perform well is just fun to watch as a coach.
"We need everybody going to beat a team like London and for the most part we had that," says Letowski. "Really excited but it's early in the season still so to get it is a big win to kind of set the tone."
Windsor improves to 3-2 on the season and sits in a two way tie with the Sarnia Sting atop the West Division.
The Spitfires host the East Division Hamilton Bulldogs at the WFCU Centre Sunday — puck drops at 2:05pm.
