A historic building in Windsor's Sandwich Town neighbourhood is getting a new tenant.
The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority is opening an office at the Sandwich post office.
Spokesperson Mark Butler says they will soon begin renovating the ground floor of the post office -- a 114-year-old building at the corner of Sandwich and Mill Streets.
Butler tells CTV Windsor it was important to open an office in the community that will soon host the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
"It just became very appropriate to us to be able to rescue if you will and revitalize a historic building in this community," says Butler.
He adds the move will provide a place for residents to meet with the project team and collect information during construction of the new $5.7-billion international crossing, set to open in 2024.
"When that construction activity happens, there will be more questions that people will have, we'll be here to answer them," says Butler.
Ward two city councillor Fabio Costante welcomes the new office.
"It certainly signals to the community that they're going to be more accessible, that they want to be accessible, that they want to hear from and learn from and work with the community as they roll out the project, specifically the community benefits project moving forward," says Costante.
Sandwich Town historian Terry Kennedy applauds the bridge authority for coming to the people.
"We're looking forward to a lot of improvements, there's a lot of expectations, this is a good start... a very good start," says Kennedy.
Kennedy tells CTV Windsor the office will be key for residents since the project is taking place in their backyard.
"We know they're going to have construction problems, we know they're going to have traffic problems, dust is already a problem," he says. "People will definitely want to have a place within the community to make those problems known and taken care of as quickly as possible."
The office is set to open sometime in March.
An open house is scheduled for January 24 from 3 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. to talk about the community benefits and the neighbourhood improvement fund.
The WDBA is also opening a community office in Delray, Michigan.
