The city of Windsor has topped its goal when it comes to recycling materials from the demolition of the old City Hall building.
Budget Environmental Disposal of Hamilton was the contractor tasked with the project and reports the waste diversion achieved was 96.5 per cent.
The city was hoping to achieve an 80-85 per cent recycle rate from materials left behind from the demolition of the old building, including crushing the concrete on site and reusing it is as backfill where the old foundation was removed.
In a release, the city says this effort was made to save money on both backfill and the cost that would have been involved to transfer material to the landfill, not to mention the environmental benefits.
Of 8,301 metric tonnes of waste from the demolition of the old City Hall building, only 283 tonnes ended up in landfill.
