The money will be used to improve conservation and fish management.

The Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research at the University of Windsor has received $9.1-million to study the health of fish.

It will be used for a project that will use advanced genetic tools to improve conservation and fish management.

Minister of Science and Sport Kirsty Duncan made the announcement on Wednesday as part of a $117-million investment in regional Genome Centres across Canada.

"Part of the problem of managing or conserving fish is you can't see them because they are under water," says GLIER Scientist and lead Investigator Dr. Daniel Heath.  "What  we propose and what we got funded to do is to use genetic approaches to try to determine what fish are in the water and how healthy they are."
