The University of Windsor's Board of Governors has approved the new Lancer Sport and Recreation Complex.
At $73-million, the university hopes the facility will draw student athletes and enhance the post-secondary experience for the entire student body.
A three court gym, a new eight-lane pool, more indoor racquet sports, plus outdoor volleyball, ball hockey and basketball facilities are a few of many new features on the way.
Women's Varsity Volleyball player Jade Ziebarth tells CTV News she's seen facilities all over the province, and Windsor's a little behind in the game.
"We just don't really measure up in that department, so I think this is a step in the right direction to put us on par with other universities," she says.
Being behind other universities can actually be seen as strength when coming up with the new design, according to Dean of Kinesiology Michael Khan.
"We've seen what other universities have done well and we've seen some of the mistake they've made and that's actually informed our project," he says. "We think we're going to have a first class project here at the university."
Head Track and Field Coach Colin Inglis tells CTV News he's already begun to use a new promotional video as a promotional tool.
"All the universities are doing it right now, be it athletic facilities, be it academic learning spaces and different things like that," he says. "It's one of those games where if you're not in it you're out of it."
Students will take on $55-million of the cost over the next 30-years and the university is responsible for $18-million — the school will assume operation of the facility.
