The President of Unifor is pledging a continuing protest in Detroit at the auto show to get General Motors' attention.
Jerry Dias spoke to a news conference in a hotel across the street from Cobo Center on Tuesday.
At the opening, Dia told reporters that workers at a Toronto area supplier -- Inteva Products in Whitby -- had walked out in protest.
The facility supplies interior components to the GM plants in Oshawa and Hamtramck.
Those Unifor members walked out this morning and aren't expected back until Wednesday morning.
Dias said it's encouraging Ontario's Premier appears to be on side
"Fighting General Motors is a significant enough battle, I ought not to have to fight the Premier of Ontario or the Prime Minister of the country," said Dias. "So I was pleased that they understood in a much more meaningful way the impact this was going to have on Canadians and frankly the impact it will have on their personal brands as well."
Dias added you can expect to see him Wednesday and again Thursday at the auto show.
Dias understands Premier Doug Ford is calling for GM to finish the contract it signed with Unifor.
"That extra nine months buys us nine months to find solutions," said Dias. "Because we are not accepting that the plant is going to close, and he understands quite emphatically that as a labour organization our union will fight to the bitter end and we expect GM will reverse their decision."
Dias didn't announce what the protest Wednesday will be, but indicated it will be in the morning.
He added it is encouraging Premier Ford had a meeting with Michigan's new Governor, Gretchen Whitmer, to discuss the GM situation.
