The U.S. Open is clarifying its policy concerning code violations after French player Alize Cornet was cited.
During extreme heat Tuesday, Cornet quickly reversed her shirt while on the court after noticing it was on backward. The change briefly exposed her sports bra.
She was given a warning by the umpire, which was categorized by some as sexist, considering male players sometimes sit court-side shirtless.
U.S. Open organizers say they regret the code violation warning, and explained women may change shirts close to the court under certain circumstances.
The penalty drew criticism on social media, with people -- including Andy Murray's mother, Judy -- noting that men frequently change their shirts while sitting in their chairs during changeovers.
