The truck driver who caused the deadly Humboldt Broncos crash has been senteced to eight years in prison.
Jaskirat Singh Sidhu of Calgary pleaded guilty earlier this year to 29 counts of dangerous driving.
Sidhu drove through a stop sign and into the path of the junior hockey team's bus at a rural Saskatchewan intersection in April, 2018.
The crash killed 16 members of the hockey team and 13 more were injured.
The Crown had asked that the 30-year-old Sidhu be sentenced to 10 years in prison, while the defence says other cases suggest a range of one-and-a-half to four-and-a-half years behind bars is appropriate.
Judge Inez Cardinal told court in Melfort, Sask., that Sidhu's remorse and guilty plea were mitigating factors, but she had to consider the number of people who died or were severely injured and face lifelong challenges.
An immigration lawyer says Sidhu is likely to be deported to India right after he serves his sentence.
Lorne Waldman, who is based in Toronto and is not involved in the case, says there's little he can do to remain in Canada.
Waldman says permanent residents such as Sidhu cannot remain in the country if they commit a crime for which the maximum sentence is at least 10 years or their jail sentence is more than six months.
And he says that with a term of more than six months, there's no right to appeal a deportation order.
