Despite reassurances that a debate on gender identity will not be moving forward, some damage has already been done according to a local trans gender advocate.
More than 50 people attended a rally in Windsor Sunday afternoon.
WE Trans Executive Director Jayce Carver says the local trans centre has been visited by youth who are concerned and committing 'self-harm.'
Premier Doug Ford says the issue will not be moving forward even though it was raised during the Ontario PC Convention last weekend.
Carver says the idea shouldn't even be discussed.
"We've heard some rollbacks since then from our premier saying this was not going to move forward, but we believe a lot of damage has already been done in the process," she said. "Even questioning people's gender identity and their right to exist does a lot of damage for our community members who are marginalized and really struggle to exist."
Earlier this month, the Tories passed a resolution at the party's convention in Toronto, calling gender identity a "controversial, unscientific, liberal ideology" that shouldn't be taught or recognized as part of school curriculums in Ontario.
Carver wants some reassurances.
"We know that the premier said that they wouldn't allow it to go forward and so we want the PC party's backing that this will absolutely not move forward," she said.
The rally was attended by local NDP MPP Lisa Gretzky and Percy Hatfield as well as the President of the Windsor-Tecumseh PC Association Scott Duquette.
